Last Hamptons Weekend

My last weekend in the hamptons this summer was cheapie chic. Stayed in Cass's house of Cassworld.com and it was it's usual ihop experience (international house of partyers). French, sweedish, british, pakistani, italian, you name it we had the language spoken. It was a refreshing change from the other house that I was staying in that was pretty all white bread american. Polo on Saturday I decided had finally jumped the shark in my books because I spotted the fashion gate crasher there. He's an older guy who is famous for gatecrashing fashion parties and shows in head to toe outlandish outfits. He only gets in because his outfits are so awful/amazing-head to toe neon was his choice for polo and I'm not sure why. Due to the Softball match the same afternoon there were zero celebrities and no champagne so it was a total...why bother???
The rest of the weekend was pretty fab with a massive bbq, volleyball on the beach (which I pitched in by watching), walks into town, and as usual some romantic interest. My RI for the weekend is my italian guest-a lawyer from milan who when I found out is actually still legally married held no interest for me. That didn't stop him from cozying up or trying to take me out to breakfast. Can't say I blame him but really he's not going to get past the front door as I'm no husband snatcher. More to reveal later...

Spanikopita, Style, and Politics

Wish I could say I have a picture from last night but it's un-pc to be a shutterbug around a person with 2 permanent personal body guards. At last nights's dinner hosted by my new extended greek family the guests of honor were FW de Klerk (former president of south africa) and his wife (who is related to our hosts and therefor remotely to me?) Wow not sure how.... but I had a wonderful evening and when FW and his lovely wife found out my metier they started downloading their fashion issues-everything from custom shoes made in london providing blisters to not being able to wear a shirt with a tie because of lack of neck.At first they asked for my card and then the wife after explaining there wasn't a shop she didn't like told me she would never hire a stylist in the end promised to call me when in New York. See everyone has body/clothing issues. We ate alfresco overlooking the sea and were served so many greek delights. What was surprising is that although desserts were bought from the finest bakery hardly anyone touched them. It was a late dinner but coincided with the feeding of the twins. I love to see how the greeks juggle it all. They make it look so easy but they do have an amazing live in staff of help. Another day in paradise.

Greetings from Greece

Oia Santorini Greece is my idea of heaven. Already I have some observations about island life. 1.Local greeks seem to place friends first and customers second-not sure why but they would chat away while you wilt in the doorstep-a total change from nyc.
2.Santorini's water is a bit like a stripper-beautiful, stunning, takes your breath away but you can look but not touch.
3. Santorini's caldera and cliff living reminds me of a barbie fun house cut in half and twisted.
4. Stilettos and heels are really a no go because of the cobblestones. An excuse to wear flats...it's going to be hard to leave.
5. So many italians...so little time. I've especially enjoyed the italian euro fashion. They love the preppy euro look and frequently fold their candy colored sweaters and then roll them to tie around their waist. In usa it would look gay....here it's cool.
stay tuned for more..

Conncecting or unplugging

Last summer I was all about unplugging from technology-my cell phone, my computer, and alarm clock, tv, all of it.
This summer with all the plans, socialness, dating, and arrows I'm realizing that your vacation is only as good as your cell phone coverage. When you have fish to fry you must be reachable. Now if only I could have a vacation from my vacation...don't hate me now....join me!

In a state of Hamptons Social Shock

NEH to NYC to Hamptons in one day?
Too much radical change for me.
Last night had an impromptu dinner party at the house and I woke up thinking about how the hamptons are really the opposite of Maine. No waspy gumption..here it's hamptons gall.
Here's a few examples of Hamptons Gall from this summer:
Stabbing your boyfriend for the second time with manicure scissors
Using the house you rented to film a porno and not in an artistic fashion
Gatecrashing every party, benefit, or opening of an envelope
Inviting 3 friends to visit when you are an unpaid 'house manager'
Accepting a last minute dinner invitation and then cancel shortly after
and more...
If you have any please comment..

WASPY MAINE

How do I describe NEH and Seal Harbor on Mount Desert Island Maine? You really don't know what you're missing untill you witness the place. Sleepy, adorable, quaint, and the opposite of new york city. No starbucks, no chains and thank god. Downside is there are few restaurants and this season Bassa was having serious staffing issues (due to drugs??? who knows).

Upside is a seriously waspy scene for a brief 8 week season. Socialites from Boston, Philadelphia, and new york arrive every july with their summer whites ready to get soiled by martinis and salt water. Some of the older folks are like osprey who fly south for the winter and chase the good weather. Most children/ toe heads are required to be blond, adorable, and on the quiet side.

Tea parties, garden parties, hikes around little long pond, gallery showings, cocktail parties, carriage rides, swims at the private clubs, tennis, golf, lobster bakes on private islands, boating to island restaurants, porch buster cocktail parties (also known as island sweeps because you've invited the whole island and your porch is bursting with people)

Hung around to see a tennis round robin. One woman was playing at least 7 months pregnant who identified as having 'waspy gumption'.

Who else has waspy gumption? Those who show up to parties uninvited, those who crash in an extra bedroom without your permission or knowledge, and hostesses who dare to serve tea sandwiches prepared by the housekeeper instead of a caterer at a tea with Martha Stewart as a speaker.
What is this world coming to?

A bargain Benefit?

$150 for seated plated lobster/filet mignon benefit dinner. Throw in open bar, cocktail hour, silent auction, exciting live auction in which my date bid up all interesting packages, live band, some serious dancing, and the society peeps of MDI and you get one hell of an evening. The icing on the cake was being seated next to last years quasi flame who acted more like a 'walker' and flaked out (probably because he has a secret girlfriend stashed in some other city that he thought I didn't know about but do. And ps you're dead to me). My date for the evening was tall, handsome, successful, bidding like crazy, and very attentive. Felt like sweet revenge to me ;)

100th post

Happy 100th post. I feel the pressure for this to be uber dishy...but no I have been a bit quiet as I was bringing it to MDI in Maine. Northeast Harbor is one of my favorite spots in the land and every august I try to spend as much time possible there. This year had no lack of relaxation/excitment/family time/socialness. I was lucky to have a dear and artistically talented friend Dean Barger lend me his charmingly adorable cottage for a week. His talent lies in decorative finishes for the home and it was such a treat to live in his own created world. His use of color is so good you may think he's gay but he's not-sorry ladies he's happily married and awaiting his first super child. The brown painted on the floors he has coined 'merde fume' aka 'smoked shit'. He's brought his talent to countless houses of society-hello the pink walls in the infamous Rockefeller Garden are thanks to him. Every inch of the house has been loved, coddled and molded into a cozy getaway. Art is ecclectic, the mix is mid century with shabby chic and dash of british masculine. While I was there I sampled hand made fresh from the oven flax bread by Jim Robinson, hosted a cozy lunch on the back porch for my grandparents, and slept like a baby.

who doesn't love to see themself on film??

omg I'm so excited..
if you missed the good american's party
here's the video and all it's goodness

Party Temperature Tester Babe

Are you guilty of running late to every party so that you can text your girlfriends to tell you how it is? One of my girlfriends pulled this on me for the best party of the season. Penthouse, free drinks, full buffet of hot apps, wonderful people, and the biggest private roofdeck in manhattan. Who would want to miss this triple threat?? What a nice change from last weeks party in honor of a pet photographer that was held at Taj-bizarro people, the only free drinks were sex on the beach (weren't those trumped by cosmos like 10 years ago) and the only food was frozen appetizers. I know it's a recession but please. If I wanted a trader joe spanikopita I can stay home.
Anywhooo...all parties are a risk and a gamble because it's your time. I always say, if you don't like it you can always leave and make up some gracious excuse.

Where the babes are

Or hot chicks as my friend Cass would say....Bryant Park Yoga Tuesday morning 10am was delicious, sweaty, and sweet. It would be heaven if I were a guy or a lesbian. 140 yogis and I only counted 3 men-not that I was counting. One of the many male onlookers found it necessary to get  picture of himself surrounded by the yogis but did not actually take the class! What I learned the hard way was that half of the mats got sun and the other half were shaded. The repeat yogis knew which ones to snag. I was just happy to have a mat enjoy free yoga in the park sponsored by Lululemon the crazy expensive yoga clothing line.
So Boys...if you're single and looking you know where to go!

Polo in the Hamptons

Really is there anything more glamorous than the Mercedes Benz Polo VIP tent Saturdays in the Hamptons? It certainly is a great opportunity for many corporate sponsors-pop chips, and teak furniture, stoli vodka....but NO CHAMPAGNE....say what! Why go??? For the people watching...for the polo match which no one watches. I spotted a few of the Housewives of New York City looking desperate...all of whom will go to an opening of an envelope. Jill Zarin, Alex McCord, and Ramona. I also saw Jon of Jon and Kate who every paparazzi made a big 2 DO about which I cannot understand. He's famous for having 8 kids...who cares. The most amusing part of the spectacle was watching the shark attack-A certain older 'matchmaker' J hooking her teeth into the hot Irishman who was chatting me up. In rapid fire she asked him serious questions...visa or green card? who do you work under at goldman sachs? where do you live? how long have you been with your girlfriend? So aggressive it was hilarious. The men found it amusing and super indicative of New York. Not that a man like that would ever need to hire a matchmaker...he seemed to have no problem getting the ladies. I think she just wanted to drool up close.

Unzipped

Jetted up on the scooter to see a screening of Isaac Mizrahi's Unzipped. Really I bought my ticket because my 'fairy fashion godfather' Harold Koda left his Maine summer house to moderate the conversation with Isaac and his coworker. I had seen the movie before but it was so much richer in the auditorium filled with fashionistas, upper eastside ladies, and a few 'fabulous' men in designer shoes.

Ms Webb....I'm ready for my closeup

Last night I participated in the filming of potential pilot for a possible television show for Bravo. My love coach girlfriend 'the love fairy' sprinkled her magic dust all over my aerie abode and today I can feel it working. And I have also seen Elizabeth's style transformation (she's looking hot and colorful) happen with a little help from moi.
But boy let me tell you the behind the scenes of a taping is an interesting show. The whole 3 hour evening will be edited down to 3 minutes!
I always wish the cameras could capture every last morsel of the evening. But that's what reality tv does right? It's natural that we would be nervous on camera and then total relax and dirty dish when they're off. Now that Sex and the City is no longer what show better to take it's place? Who doesn't need a little help in the love department?
We all agreed to put in our release form NOT FOR NATIONAL TELEVISION AIR. There is a reason why I haven't applied for the bachlorette. I don't want to be on television showing my dating dirty laundry but it's fun to dish on a blog...I guess I'm a conflicted, complicated, old fashioned girl. Yes I've said that already...
The filming crew (ironically called Disposable) was about 7 hipsters and the equipment was crazy. The lights, the cords, the cameras, the mics, the rearranging of the apartment, the many questions-it was an exciting circus. The talented and beautifully UK accented Lauren Whitworth was onset to 'jussh' our makeup which I was quiet pleased with a little bump up of glamour. As I was part of the filmed show, managing the location, providing candles, platters, light stylish props, and on hand for style questions it was busy. The set up was what took the longest and in downtime the uber knowledgeable Donna Sonkin explained the scientific behind cellulite and how getting healthy makes you thin. Nothing was scripted on our part and the format was a casual ladies night dish about dating with Elizabeth Webb guiding us, encouraging us, educating us in the best ways to navigate dating in NYC. My favorite part was the bon bon=short lived boy toy fling metaphor. There was cheese, champagne, and bon bons to nibble on during the taping but none of us wanted to be seen eating-we're such girls. My champers glass was filled with sparkling water and did end up on my dress at one point due to excitement. It was a party but nothing got broken.

The Current Reality of Craiglist postings for biz

I’m not sure when exactly Craigslist jumped the shark, but it’s definitely in another continent right now. With all the murders and personal ads looking for ‘friends with benefits it’s gotten a bad reputation. My makeup artist friend swears by finding good jobs in fashion. So every once in awhile I would search ‘fashion stylist’. Most of the listing were obviously unpaid or ‘tfp’ aka ‘trade for prints’ but I found myself skeptical/excited about a post for a pilot TV show that was looking for wardrobe stylists and designers. I’m used to most craigslist’s emails to be unanswered but this one responded with a meeting time of Thursday 1pm and to be on time! I showed up a few minutes early only to realize I don’t even the name of the company I was visiting. Ushered through a freight entrance into a mini boite with defunct disco ball there was more adventure to unfold. The air was stagnant-no AC and other interviewees all sitting on benches silent. I felt out of place being one of the only Caucasian in the room. Obama is leading this new trend. We wait and wait and wait. The host- Rafael Benito obviously waiting on the rest of the crew. No organization or table set up, their crew finally gets their ‘s%$t’ together and leads us upstairs. The ‘producer’ we are told is Jay Ellis who produced Gloria Gaynor. To our knowledge he has no experience in the TV world but the most important thing is for us to believe in the project. Wearing black track pants, black t-shirt, shaggy dyed hair, and a permanent mini cigarillo in his mouth as he mumbles his spiel it becomes obvious that this relict left his brain in the 70’s from dropping acid. He’s also in bad need of a makeover, which would be a big undertaking. We are told the show will be a reality show taking place in this club and will be featuring gay and bisexuals and that several networks are interested because he has so many contacts in the world. Yeah and I can fly. Funny I run into another stylist I know from the scene whose publicist sent her to this casting. She leaves pissed off before getting interviewed. Despite the fear/bad feeling in my stomach I stick around just to see what happens. The ‘producer’ tells us the most important thing is that we ‘believe’ in the show and that it will makes us ‘hot’ in the industry. The pilot is an unpaid job and he doesn’t seem to grasp the concept that budgets are needed to accomplish wardrobe for film. He also doesn’t seem to understand the difference between a wardrobe stylist and a designer or have any interest in looking at any of our portfolios. We are asked if we are ‘in’ because apparently they are taking any and all stylists that will have the project. I retort that they are going to have to cast the talent to avoid having ‘too many cooks in the kitchen’. They admit that ‘something will be worked out’. After a disorganized meeting with several minions who seem to understand the business a little bit more I shake hands and thank them for my time. I wouldn’t work with these wakadoodles if they paid me….The sad thing is that I left behind 3 stylists who were on board. It seems in this crazy economy some are taking advantage.

Free Hamptons?

What is the hidden cost of a free place to stay in the Hamptons? Several times this summer I have been invited to stay at single guy's homes in the Hamptons. These are men who I know in a limited capacity. It boarders on inappropriate because I know what their agenda is. But hey can you blame them? I'm cute. I'm attractive. I look hot in red. I however will not put myself in a compromising situation. I know there are lots of other women who would jump on the opportunity but not realize the bad choice until the guy makes an unwelcome advance.
Recently I was in the Hamptons with a fun girlfriend who hooked us up with a free room in a 'friend's' house in Southampton. The price in 3 parts:
-feeling dirty due to no hot water showers and no hot breakfast due to the gas not working
-my friend fending off an unwelcome move
-may have to pay for Mercedes mirror that we dinged while bringing back coffee and croissants for the house.
I guess it's true that no good deed goes unpunished!

Any thoughts or stories to add? please comment...

Private Ping Pong

In New York, it's all about the private clubs. Shhhhh.....ladies this is wonderful spot filled with 2/3rd men and 75% single. Hurry since memberships are very reasonable and it's still not officially open. SpiNyc (http://www.spinyc.com/) is a private ping pong club in the lower level of 304 Park Avenue South. Entrance is on 23rd and is totally on the dl. Management is waiting on the liqour liscense but ponging is open. There are three distinct areas-the back private party room sponsored by Fred Perry-very dark, preppy, and handsome/still a bit raw, modern hip and clean locker rooms (you may work up a sweat for those serious ping pong players), and the main attraction ping pong area complete with bleachers and bar for those who want to oggle. I found out about this hip spot from my talented friend Masala of redmasala.com. Our good friend Mikey (founder of http://mikeyshookup.com/) is a charter member and long time ponger. Ceo/owner Andrew informed us that the floor in the ping pong room is the same floor they do the olympics on and took 2 weeks to install. Afficiandos will enjoy that and others will enjoy the laid back and playful attitude of the place. Unique architectural features such as the playing room having a window onto the subway platform, and existing 1930's revolving door from the old woolworth passage impressed us. I'm hoping the let girls pong for free....hint hint. Andrew was very welcoming to us and encouraged us to stop by anytime! Considering the vibe I think I may do that!

Sundays in the Hamptons

Sunday afternoon we're at The Chateau (shabby chic delapitated shack with direct bay beach access) in Hampton Bays hosted by a charming group of europeans. One red hot architect serves us a true argentinean bbq. First hamburguesas, skirt steak, and then sirloin. After sating ourselves I wryly added, " I think I need some more meat," the host offered me a grand tour of the house ;)
As we're parting for Sunset Beach on shelter island our hosts announce, "we have the sunset here". "You don't understand.....IT's not about the sunset!"
On the ferry I am descended upon by a potential suitor who failed to return my phone call letting him know I would be in the hamptons this weekend. 'Justin' gets out of his car and comes to kiss me on the cheek and proceeds to tell me about having to escort a friends old aunt via car all the way to aspen and then flying back to the east coast yesterday...his place being crammed full of house guests forcing him to flee and stay at another house, yada yada yada....I'm guessing he's thinking he needs to make excuses to me. But seriously does he think he went to siberia where there were no telephones! Give me a break playa!
Arriving at the beachy saint tropez wanna be hotspot the place is exploding with people and we wonder if we're going to be able to park on this island. I have seen this place busy but this is a CF. Just getting in the door is a mosh pit like experience and getting a table-forget about it. They are no longer taking names and most tables are overflowing with hangers on. Hamptons seems to be a perfect breeding ground for the peter pan syndrome. All the men are the same and the women are younger and newer to the scene. European women are dressed like prostitutes trying to pull off 'beach coverups' over bathing suits as appropriate attire? We were trying to figure out which group was this season's Estonian hookers and pimp currently working out of the American Hotel but everyone fits the bill. Urban myth or social trend? I call it the Shelter Island Shit Show!

Red Hot Wedding Dress

I just realized where I the seed for my red wedding dress came from. I’m watching Oliver Stone's Wild Palms on DVD, which I watched when I was in high school. I was obsessed with it and even recorded it on the vhs. I loaned the tapes to my best friends brother and he never returned them. I still want them back. But anyways…Kim Cattrall is in it and gets married in a very dramatic bright red wedding ensemble-kinda 80’s with a twist of chinoiserie and the bustle of the last century. That’s my idea of a statement. Why get married in white today when brides aren’t virgins?

Small Pond... Big French Head

This is how small of a pond New York City is. I'm at a loft party on friday in the flatiron. I see a cute dark haired friendly frenchie. He introduces himself to my girlfriends and I. Later I realize he looks really familiar so after climbing over a sofa (I wouldn't recomend this move in a dress) I ask him and his conceited reply is, "I was on mtv" Nope Superstar-in-your-mind I don't have cable so that's not it. We're talking about fashion and he non-chalently adds that he owns a famous local fashion designer, I won't say who. She's from Marin county like me, went to Paris and really broke out when she made a film with Ellen von Unwerth and Kirsten Dunst to promote her line. Back in the New York she has been the toast of the town and even did a line for a big discount store. Now the real dish comes out, he's been not just her financial half but her beau and now they are on the outs. He tells me he's selling the line because they are breaking up. I guess too many flashbulbs from Patrick McMullen does not make a happy couple. He seems a little sad to me. When I go to bid adieu he makes a motion like punching buttons on his hand. I'm guessing he's asking for my number lazy foreign man style. I give him my card and he plants a nice smooch on the lips. Cheeky one also grabs a feel/cuddle and remarks, "you're skinny!" Not sure what to do with that one but his lips were very pillowy. A week later I'm looking over pics on facebook from the Hamptons and see that we were at the same pool birthday party the previous sunday. See, I never forget a face...not even a player's.

A Caravan Hawaiian Birthday without the Jet Lag

Last night I attended one of the wackiest birthdays ever. A blog (http://hawaiianbirthdaytrip.blogspot.com/) was built for the invitation, Obama was invited, grass skirts were worn in new ways, rice crispy treats were formed as Jesus on the cross, umbrellas were brought for drinks, trailer park turtle treats were served, I had the best lei, and fun was had by all.
We traveled by rail (the 4:20) to Tarrytown where we landed at the Washington Irving Yacht Club where it was still drizzling so we had the outdoor tent to ourselves. A very merry and bright group we managed to terrorize our hot conductor Steve who cringed at our cat calls. I think we may have gotten him in trouble...Oh well, we were too busy having too much fun to care. The Hawaiian theme was carried out by all who attended but as the party went on, our outfits got crazier and wackier. More leis were layered on, grass skirts adorned waists, necks, caps, caftans were added, coconut bras were added in new stylish ways. I personally had two outfits. One black and white hawaiian print skirt with sleek top, lei, red coat and then once the party was under way I draped myself in mind altering and blinding orange and white caftan, orange sunglasses, scarf as obi. I was not the only guest with Japanese slant to the Hawaiian theme.
I think the photos speak for themselves.

Toe Tapping at the Astaire Awards

My fabulous makeup artist friend Michiko (www.michikoboorberg.com) hooked me up big time with a ticket to the Fred Astaire Awards at FIT this week. She was hired to do makeup backstage and ended up doing makeup for Alan Cumming who was hosting and wanted a smokey eye and Liza Minelli (who just wanted a little rogue darling!) The two gentlemen to my left were very friendly and gave me their extra ticket so that I could get into the VIP Party. Wow talk about attracting wonderful experiences into my life. I was a dancer when I was younger and loved the opening tap number 'Luck be a Lady' perfromed by Art of Dance. Just when you thought the stage was crammed full of adorable dancers tapping, more dancers came out younger, smaller, and cuter. As the number went on I fell in love with every single tiny dancer. My young seat mate thought they were pretty hot too-getting a jump on robbing the cradle. Overall as award shows go it was pretty entertaining. There were a fair number of bold faced names introducing other bold faced names. Alan Cumming introduced Marisa Berenson who spoke about awardee Stanley Donen and introduced Liza Minelli who awarded (off script) Stanley Donen. The production level was sporatic and audio problems plagued the entire show. One of the best moments was when Fred Astaire's daughter (no spring chicken) asked the audience "you hear that too?" referring to the echo voice as a result of a audio snafu. Alan Cumming was witty and funny, seeing Stockard Channing was a highlight, and the dancing of Martha Plimpton as sexy seductrice pretty stellar. I thought the quality of the people involved was really high but the event would do better in a more sophistocated venue next year. My girlfriend and jeweler to the stars Donna Distefano designed the handmade awards which sadly I didn't get to see because of a projection snafu. Wearing a black form fitting cocktail dress and on the host committee was Countess Luann Lesseps (whose countess title was omited from the program-I wonder why?) Strangly even though she is on tv, a lot of people didn't know who she was. I was more excited by Geoffrey Rush but left him be. The VIP with the ambiance of a school gym was interesting as I found myself hit on my men too young and tap dancing older married ones. The nibbles weren't bad and crowd seemed refreshingly sophistocated after fire island. I was left thinking though that none of the winners have come close to the impact that Fred Astaire had an american cinema. I can only dream that dance will rise again.

CULT DIVAS Abby and Tori

So I was excited to return to the Cooper Square Hotel Rooftop Penthouse as it's my new 'hot shit' place and I was even more elated to attend "THIS IS A HOLD UP!" Hosted by slapstick/improv dramatic diva's Abby Pope and Tori who are raising money and awareness for their film, 'The Hunt for Good Americans'(www.indiegogo.com/TheHuntForGoodAmericans ). They are aiming to travel around America this summer searching for adventure, comedy, and the message of living a life luxury without spending a grand. In this hunt they hope to encounter, witness, and play with eccentric famous and quasi famous Americans all the while catching the magic on camera in the format of little skits.
These girls are hilarious and have the right CAN DO attitude so please if you can contribute to their cause because they are going to Sundance! I can feel it. Just based on their creative 'outfits' made solely of dishtowels, vintage baubles and song and dance about sporting 'crate and barrel' and williams sonoma. A cult classic in the making.
