The high quality video is produced by the same talented people at World Dance New York. I wish I had watched this before going to the Prom but now I have some new tips in my arsenal. Just the cat eye demo is a must for any fashionista. For my recent photo shoot I slept in foam curlers and arrived onset with my Hermes scarf tied around my head- techniques I picked up from this video. Not exactly the most comfortable way to sleep but the outcome was gorgeous.

Organized and crafted by Adam Aleksander and Jenny Miller of Les Salonnieres the private underground supper club. In New York it's all about life on the DL-hitting a public restaurant is so common but a private event with creative programming that promotes artists hits the spot.
Photo installation by Ventiko was built to provoke discourse around identity, creation, deconstruction, and creative ownership-she encouraged guests to take a piece home.
The beautiful hostess with style Christina wore a vintage inspired outfit and a few birds in the bee hive inspired do.
A handcrafted 5 course meal with paired dance performances sent guests into a sublime state of bliss.
An oyster shucking demonstration by the lovely Cathy Erway who wrote 'The Art of Eating In'.
Amazing performance art by Wendell Cooper that made me aspire to make performance art-that's a first. Can't wait to get the videos to show you.

1950's Epic Prom was a dream come true

I never got the chance to go to my prom. Long sad story but now I know why it wasn't in the cards for me. From not going I never got trauma or pain from it and when presented with the opportunity to go as a adult I jumped on it! A few years ago I went to an 80's prom with a fashionista friend as my date and happily crimped my hair and said 'oh my god' ' like totally' way too many times and had a blast.

This EPIC Prom created by the decor design god Adam Aleksander of Adam Aleksander Presents and Brain Quinn of Noble Rot proved to be a magical experience that transported me to the 1950's. Set in a defunct catholic school St. Cecilia's at 1 Monitor street in Willliamsburg.
The 4 course cafeteria inspired menu by Theo Peck and Nick Suarez of The Food Experiments was creative, nostalgic and inventive. I went crazy for the pate and crackers and I heard reports of the mac and cheese being amazing.
Honored with the role of judging and awarding crowns to Prom King and Queen I took my job seriously (well who else better suited for the job?). I interviewed guests and no outfit was left unexamined. There were no lack of imaginative costumes on the women attendees. I was looking for the magic couple which was highly participatory at the Epic Prom-no wallflowers, dressed in vintage ware appropriate for a prom, and with great attitudes. Jenny and Parr had been the first guests to sign up for the Prom, had fretted about their outfits and even Parr's red blazer was vintage. Jenny's green dress was the talk of the evening with it's endless crinolines actually belonged to a kind friend. They also got bonus points for spending lots of quality time on the dance floor.
Attending the event stag I secretly wished I could win Prom Queen but alas I judged but there was no time for being a wallflower. Despite no previous Prom experience I was whisked on the dance floor many times and was part of the crew who closed the joint-that's a first for me. DJ Count Zero (Matt Mikas) spun VINYL oldies 90% of the evening and the cool cats were diggin the tunes. As if we didn't have enough entertainment we were lucky enough to enjoy a high energy performance by Harlem James Gang.
Enjoyed a nightcap with one of my dancing fiends and new friend from Brooklyn 365 which is a very cool site. Went home happy singing to myself, "I could have danced all night"

This post is dedicated to my writing mentor and favorite 'uncle' Mark Gautier-Stay tuned for info on his play 'My Sister Michael'

I was able to play hooky on the premiere day during lunch time and see the sold out Sex and the City 2. I was aware of all the negative press so I went in with very low expectations. I figured I'm just going to watch the movie to watch the costumes. I do this frequently with old movies with slow going plots. Cineplex on 34th street was packed with Starbucks sipping, Louis Vuitton (the gateway drug of designer bags) toting, metro riding fans-ie wanna be fashionistas -ie big FANS. I got to chatting with the woman next to me who said she too knew about the bad reviews but had to see the show.
Wos there are so many bad reviews on the internet there are compilations of the WORST REVIEWS
The film totally delivers as a feast for the eyes in fact there were so many moments in the first 15 minutes of the film that I wanted to freeze frame and take in each little bobble and costume details by Patricia Field. Can't say I liked anything about SJP's best man get up-even the crown and hair atrocious. The movie certainly obviously attempting to bring big production glamour of vintage films such as Top Hat, and Gigi. The swans in the gay wedding must have been a reference to a 40's film. Talk about over the top. I felt the costumes were really garish and my favorite quote called the movie a "home video of gay men playing with giant Barbie dolls.” — Lindy West, The Stranger. The worst outfit in the whole movie for me was Samantha's red suit with spikey shoulder pads. How is that going to attract a man? Oddly I felt Miranda who is usually boring was the best dressed of the bunch-sleek and chic.
I certainly have a problem with the way SJP is continually put in bras and underwear that show through her clothing and nightgowns (who in real life wears bras to bed hello uncomfortable) because it sends a bad message to the public and private clients always ask me about if they can pull it off and I usually retort, "sorry but No but you're not Madonna" And hello who wears heels on a camel????
The fans and I were in heaven and Liza Minelli singing 'All the single ladies' certainly made it worth it. I was trying to figure out if those were her actual legs under semi transparent leggings or a body double. Wow-she's been lifted and tucked but she's a showstopper. The jokes on sex and menopause were crass, campy, basic, and expected but I have to admit I laughed. You get what you paid for.
Later on that evening I caught the 7:30pm show at Magnet theater with an improv group named Taco Supreme. As they take suggestions from the audience and are a group of 4 women (rare combo at this theater) I jumped on the opportunity to yell out 'Sex and the City' when asked for something on my mind this week. Boy did they take this one to town. I was howling. None of them could pass for any of the characters-no Charlottes here but no matter. There was a scene with a grandma demanding to be taken to a live burlesque show and then the actual stripping scene where grandma gets her own twisted lap dance, watching strangers have sex in the window across from your dorm room-trying to hide that scene when the parents stopped by, and a riff on reading romance novel like 'dusty plains' (fictitious but hilarious title by Danielle Steele for the juicy bits.)
I will be returning often to the Magnet Theatre for sidesplitting laughs but NOT buying SATC 2 for my video style collection.

Pratt Fashion Show 2010

Pratt Fashion Show 2010

Honoring the fashion icon Catherine Malandrino (looking gorgeous in a pewter silk one shoulder cocktail dress and introduced by the fabulous Kim Hastreiter) was a huge draw for this event held at the Altman Building but Timothy Kuzmeski stole the show for me. They definately saved the best for last. With his over the top volumenous and artisitic creations creeping down the runway the dress needed aid of helpers to turn it around. The handiwork is even more impressive in person. It's no wonder his first internship was with the famous and New York's sole Haute Couture designer Chado Ralph Rucci. Seeing his work gave me hope for fashion as art or as Timothy says, "l'art pour l'art'. Good to know that this notion did not die with the passing of Alexander McQueen. I cannot wait to see him open his own fashion house.
Also in the evening collections worth noting were Devin Cole whose hand painted creations reminded me a bit of Rodarte, Kasia Wisniewski's deco inspired gowns, and Natalia Rodriguez's bejeweled confections.
The Costume Design collections really blew my mind. Alessandra Hammett took the very archetypal fairy tale characters and brought them to life as Queen of Hearts and Cinderella
Another crowd pleaser was Rayneese V Primrose's Thriller Death to the Homecoming queen was both gothic yet fashionable.
Kathleen Su's sportswear reminded me a bit of Heatherette yet still was innovative, fresh, and very street.
We didn't get to see any of Spencer Richardson's collection on the runway but based on the catalogue I would love to see what he does next as his knit dresses looked promising.
Also seen were collections from Julie Ann Mollo, May Samoto, Abby Powell, Jennifer Damm, Suzie Ford, Lina Fedirko, Nina Zilka, Jeff Dodd, David J Krause, Kristen Steinman, K. Paige Regan, Emma Madnick, Christie Espinosa, Christine Brown, Tiffany Nousiopoulos.
In the audience a few notables-Iris Apfel in front row looking very stylish in her signature ethnic beads, the celebrity stylist Freddie Leiba, celebrity stylist and actor Philip Bloch in a very cool hat, Hamish Bowles, Ralph Pucci, Gilles Mendel, Hal Rubenstein, and Mickey Boardman of Paper.

New York Photo Festival

I ventured out to Dumbo to check out the New York Photo Festival for the second year in a row. It's going on through this weekend. Unlike most New Yorkers I don't have a phobia about crossing bridges and exploring the Brooklyn borough-I actually cherish it. But I must say I was left a bit underwhelmed by the festival and craving a fashion focused photo festival. If you know of one..please let me know. Here are some pics of some pieces and installations I felt were worthy and interesting. Void during this show were galleries or hawkers. I got the feeling that purchasing was not an option.My first stop was the DutchDoc!Space which was a labyrinth of book pages curated by Marga Rotteveel. Using materials from others in the dutch spirit of 'we do it ourselves' the following photographers in this show are Petra Stavast, Daan Paans, Wytske van Keulen, and Willem Popelier.

These images were pulled from google street views and blow up by Michael Wolf. I love how the notion of who can claim ownership of images the artist,the mechanism, the Internet, or google is being questioned.

My last stop was at the talk given by Paul Kooiker who uses photography and post production tools on the computer to assemble groups of images expounding on the same theme or subject. He spoke at length about his work and what fascinated me is that he hired models that aren't often booked and said they were often older and larger. I wonder if he was last picked in dodge ball as a kid...He also is pushing the viewer to become a voyeur and never shows the face of his art subject because he likes theme of anonymity.

Ahh the Affordable Art fair. On of my favorite fairs in new york city. Just like the grocery store where I feel free spend the fair caps art works at under 10K. Not bad for some top notch art. It was very tightly curated fair this season held at 7 west 35th street in Manhattan. Here are some of my top pics.
My first stop was in meeting the charming and beautiful Izabella Kay an artist of PassionateCuriosityAboutBlue and owner of London based gallery called Vernissage representing several polish photographers. Here are three that I loved. All c-type diasec on aluminum and mounted on glass.

This has been a busy week but I managed to squeeze in a little ME time and took myself out to Le Relais de Venise L'entrecote newly opened on Lexington and 52nd.
The original L'entrecote is in Paris bien sur but why did I take myself out when I'm such a homebody? Nostalgia and I wanted to see how they could possible replicate a Parisian institution. In 1996 I was 'stuck' in Paris living with a fabulous French boyfriend I will call him 'G'-he's still the standard for me and he took me there one evening. Located not far from the Eiffel Tower I was shocked to arrive and find a long line outside. G explained this is the best steak in all the land and it is worth the wait. Boy was he right and what the steak brought to the rustic table was matched in attitude, simplicity, and ambiance. No menu, they just ask you how you like your steak done-'a point, saingant, ect' and I think they guillotine you if you order it well done. Tables were covered in brown paper and they marked on the table in pencil the wine and how you want your steak prepared with a simple scrawl. How refreshing and relaxing not to worry about what to eat. Along with the heavenly steak with heavenly fries, came also a green salad. Talk about having your cake and eating it too. Back in at the New York outpost I was enjoying my steak frites but realizing that the Parisian ambiance that 'je ne sais quoi' was missing. The Lexington location is too clean and with a 'no smoking' sign. All attempts have been made to replicate the brasserie look with the tiered service bar, armoire serving stations, banquets in burgundy, the french small wine glass but it lacks history. I secretly wished they had employed a company to make the place look older than Peter Luger. Plenty of Williamsburg new restaurants have opened with tin ceilings and the appearance of age. I would have much preferred a little fake old instead of the shiny and bright. I do give them props for the black and uniforms a la Jeanne Moreau in Diary of a Chambermaid. I guess I just miss Paris!

Vogue’s own Andre’ Leon Talley was the guest speaker at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) Thursday evening serving up thoughts on personal style, etiquette and grace while being interviewed by Valerie Steele. Not to be upstaged by the PETA protesters outside FIT, in regard to Mr. Talley’s penchant for wearing fur, he made his regal entrance in a Karl Lagerfeld Couture ‘Tiepolo Red’ McFarland cape and embracing his own essence of ‘high and low’ brow fashion, paired it with a crystal-adorned NAACP t-shirt created by Harlem’s own Gerald Matthews. Andre’ spoke of his Grandmother, his dear friend and mentor Diana Vreeland and of designers Karl Lagerfeld and Alexander McQueen to which Andre’ stated of the former, ‘we’ve lost a poet – a master of romanticism’. Especially interesting was the idea that clothes are a ‘code of correctness and appropriateness’, an idea Mr. Tally shares equally with Ms. Vreeland. Apparently Ms. Vreeland also felt that polish was a particular code of discipline, therefore prompting Andre’ to spray shellac his own set of Louis Vuitton luggage. Polish indeed. “Personal style comes from within”, he reminded everyone in the audience. He championed new designers with the ideals of “always live your dreams” and “never give up on your dreams”. Finally, we were left with these words of inspiration; “Fashion is a multifaceted stone.”… “Whatever you put on is fabulous, because it came from your own fantasy”.
Mary (Coco) Assenmacher spends her nights as a cardiothoracic surgery nurse practitioner in New York City, with her free time spent both printmaking as well as living and breathing fashion. "Fashion inspires me to do anything I want to do".

During her short performance at Les Salonnieres she charmed 3 audience members to strip to be her backup naked cherubs while fanning themselves with egg cartons. Result-pure spontaneous genius. Zac Posen for Target 24 Hour Party

Can't say there was a huge selection of 'must haves' when I arrived to the Zac Posen for Target 24 hour Party on a rainy Friday Morning. I opted out of the red carpet party the night before despite enticing tweets from other attendees but was shocked to see the event so bare of people and variety of merchandise. Bit like being in a club during the day time. The pop up store concept has soared in NY and this was a big difference from the Liberty from London pop up mob scene. I wondered if it was the location of 8th Avenue or that this party and color scheme was a more night time feel. Never the less I was fascinated by the event design and what they did to the 'rough around the edges' space attached to a non-descript hotel. I met a lovely French who was so impressed by the tuxedo pants she was buying 2 and thought the quality was really good. She refused to let me take her photograph but described her style as edgy and was very pleased with her purchases which she let me shoot. I had a hard time picking out something to try on because I really couldn't see any of the collection being workhorse or seriously versatile. There seemed to be racks of a bad strapless prom type dress in black and red that looked great in photos but cheap in person and priced at $99. However, I tried on 2 dresses-the black knit dress was a color I wouldn't wear but riffing on Herve Legere I found it to be a strong piece except for the thick hem that was too transparent for my taste. I definitely looked like a more expensive dress. The gold/black kicky dress had wonderful pleating and stitch detailing but at the end of the day is a stretch metallic Lycra fabric suited for clubbing and not my lifestyle. It is inspiring to see Zac Posen's career which has gone so far from his grassroots start at the kitchen table.

I was so inspired by the location where the last Artist Salon (@LesSalonnieres) was held in the lower east side on Saturday night that I took some arty stills. Luckily I arrived early to prep for my talk and got some with natural light. Part of the allure of the evening was the slight fear of danger. A dinner mate intimated that he wondered if we would fall through the floor at any moment. Could have been all the nooses hanging around inspiring our smooze about suicide until a fellow artist suggested we switch to discussing sex. There was no typical lighting fixtures so the whole evening was powered by candle lite. Adam Aleksander hosted in what is probably one of the last authentic tenements. I've seen so many interior decorators in Williamsburg fake this decor look but this was the 'swept up' real deal. Below are some of the artists who made this event special:

As for the style and fashions, Austin is no L.A. or Manhattan - but it has a unique style of it's own - especially during SXSW - lot's of black & grey's, skinny jeans, short flowered sundresses, stripes, cherry red Ray-Ban sun glasses. Hipster heaven - rockabily, indie and punk style! And there were so many unofficial shows and shindigs that inevitably spring up on the outskirts of the more structured festivities.
My first event to attend, albeit on a rainy Monday Night was an invite-only St. Supery tasting and Twitter meet-up at CRU wine bar. We tasted 4 lovely wines from Napa and an assortment of cheeses. The winery's social media guy, Rick Bakas was on hand along with a big screen of live tweets from guests and supporters. Live, virtual reactions to how things tasted! NYC based media outlet, Thrillist recently launched in Austin and held an event at the infamous BBQ joint, Stubb's.

Being with Richard Bishop from L.A. of Three AM Artist Management was certainly a pleasure. Always good to be with a hotshot music agent from L.A. at something like this!
We hit the Max's Wine Dive showcase of bands (Avi Buffalo, Baron Von Luxxury, The Soft Pack and Anya Marina) sponsored by The Domain's new aLoft Hotel. Guests scored points for the Spin and Foursquare (the newest social media craze) hosted contests. Later in the afternoon, we discovered a new D.C. based band, The Dance Party, who is just might be the next big thing in electro pop-rock and lead singer looks like a young, hot Johnny Depp. They are all hot, talented & young! That was upstairs at Malverde, above the hot 2nd Street district Mexican restaurant, La Condesa, followed by a legendary DJ set listening to the techno big-beat sounds of The Crystal Method. Took a break for a media interview with a Texas-native band 5, Dignan With over a million My Space hits, they seem poised to keep rocking the scene with their auroral melodies, poetic percussion and ethereal lyrics. Asked where they get their inspiration from, they said Grizzly Bear, Beach House and Arcade Fire. Dignan is the name of a character in the Wes Anderson movie, "Bottle Rocket."

The highlight was on Friday, 200 guests attended a SXSW after-party hosted by John Popper benefiting the local charity H.O.P.E. (http://www.hopecampaign.org/.) Big Red Sun Venue & Gardens ( was the spot, where guests had access to a 7,000 square foot hidden garden in up & coming East Austin. While the DJ Logic got it going, guests mingled under a moonlit pecan groove in the hidden outdoor oasis. The 1930's craftsman style bungalow located on the property had four rooms where sponsors held court and tastings were held by Padilla Cigars, Crunk Energy Drink, Pop Chips, Relish Cupcakes, Walton's Fancy & Staple's "Tippy Bars" (Sandra Bullock's bakery & cafe.) Bartenders served cocktails mixed with local spirits - Dripping Springs Vodka, Deep Eddy Sweet Tea, Icelandic Glacial, Treaty Oaks Rum and Toro de Lidia Tequila made the perfect margaritas. Blues Traveler playing was the real treat- live music under the stars, literally! Local celeb Matthew McConaughey and the actor Woody Harrelson turned out.

Style File-Solving Saturday's Fashion Challenges

Last week I worked with a high powered executive who was breezing through New York on business. We managed to carve out a few hours for a shopping expedition. Despite her high visibility job her fashion hunt was in the weekend genre. Her closet hole was in stylish ware for Saturdays. She had found that besides jeans or sweats she didn't know what to wear to be comfy but also stylish and a step up. Before setting out we reviewed her some style and colors which will work uniquely for her. So with our limited time and budget~aren't we all recessionistas now~so with our laser focus we set off the tackle Century 21 and then follow up with DVF and Trina Turk in the Meat Packing District.
So I know what you're thinking that Century 21 is unthinkable, way too chaotic, crazy, and stressful. YES it can be. But not with a Stylist (that would be me) and not early Tuesday morning. I bet you didn't know that Century 21 down at 22 Cortlandt street opens at 7:45 AM-9pm Monday thru Friday (shhh don't tell too many recessionista fashionistas).
With our detailed list of flattering peplum sweaters, long sleeve tops, and upscale jeans or pants that have jeans-ness we took Century 21 by storm. We headed straight the designer area and worked our way noodling, pulling, and trying items. In the dressing room through the process we found great items for the steal of $155. Two sweaters-one navy, another brown with peplum flounce-both are loose but very flattering and wrappable with a belt. The miracle with these sweaters is that despite them having the ability to flatter her waist-it's not really possible to outgrown them because they had no closures. We also found a stretch cotton long sleeve by Velvet in navy with ruffles built into the front and pants with jeans like styling-great pieces to add style to casual moments. While in the dressing room seeing rejects we learned key points for her-ruching in the breast area not good, no boxy cuts that hide her waist, and nothing too lowcut. The finishing touch was hitting the belt section and finding a belt that would work with both sweaters, elevate the look, and flatter her gorgeous waist. Mission accomplished...so yes I would say Century 21 has 'fashion worth fighting for'

Buttons of Beauty-the message of mixing

Seeing a mixing button trend (matching is so 80's) in art and also in reality. My good friend and a talented artist Abigail Pope who is know on OFG as a conspirator of The Hunt for the Good Americans sewed a melange of fun buttons on this vintage jacket. I also found out that the total costume budget for their film was just under $2,000-talk about making a dollar stretch to the max! She shows us here a great way to create a one of a kind piece.
Also shown is a close up of an army bag decorated with buttons from the Pulse art show here in New York City this March by Persian born Sara Rahbar. It's no wonder I love her work she attended FIT and Saint Martins. She's also fascinated with America as she did a whole series on the American flag.

Tony Feher's 3 tables of assembly of garbage did nothing for me except question the success of this gallery. I might pay a dollar for the porno playing cards but come on. The kicker? At Art Basel in Miami this December walking the show during 'vip' preview hours was sheer bliss. You could just imagine the other visitors stepping off their private jets in their head to toe designer looks and Hermes bags from waiting lists and 20k price tages.
But yesterday at the Armory Show at the piers was a whole other monster. It was packed and it seemed all the cool people of the NYC art world was there. But as the day went on I ran into more and more people I know and realized that New York's definition of 'VIP' has changed. The aisles were clogged and it was frankly hard to see the art objectively. The show seemed not exclusive to those in the market to pick up a small modern art piece for a cool half a million and art media but hangers ons and even those who don't work in the art world or buy in the art world or even care about the art. And I saw a fair number of girls dressed up on dates. WTF? I guess the sheer density of New York is affecting attendance. The bottom line is art is cool but let's hope it helps the fiscal bottom line.

Underwhelmed by the clothes. Overwhelmed by the (possibly rent-a??)'celebs'. I spend most of the time during this presentation checking out the front row. Bai Ling-I can't actually remember what she's been in, Kelly Bensimon (in rolled up jeans and red pumps) who everyone loves to hate from The Real Housewives of New York City, Tinsley Morimer (probably not for rent as she is currently promoting her show HIGH SOCIETY) currently rocking straight locks sitting next to a delicious long haired male whose name I do not know because I don't watch American Idol, and some girl with a white dog who turns out to be blogger Julia Allison. Did I not get the memo of white purse pooch is the new accessory? The clothing I felt were lacking in the fabulousness that I have loved in the past. Maybe it was that it was wearable, retailable, and just not enough of a statement for my taste. The excess of gray and predictable colors didn't help either. I did enjoy a few sparkly pieces which I've shared here. But hey I guess that's what happens when Luca Orlandi stops designing LUCA LUCA and is replaced with another. How can you really successfully replace a designer? It didn't work with Halston and I'm sure they will try to 'replace' Alexander McQueen but really......." I mean what?!" to quote my favorite Abe Gurko

Yarn Sculpture on Speed-Koi Suwannagate

Do you love hand sculptured details in your knits-and one of a kind? Look to Koi Suwannagate to feed the urge. To see these pics is to scratch the surface at her talent. The 3 dimensional details are incredible in person-she add vintage and organic fabrics when she can. I could liken them to embroideries on speed. At the MBFW Fall 2010 Presentation I ran into Julie Gilhart which is no mystery since Barney's carries the line. But if you're on a tighter budget Anthropologie sells a few select pieces under the label lawan by Koi Suwannagate.

A funny thing happened last night in the tents of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. After a long day I wasn't going to attend the Perry Ellis men's Fall 2010 runway show but then my partner got stuck in the train so alas I decided to take my seat. I was pleasantly surprised to find a whole other world-a whole new type of audience almost foreign to me-very very MALE. Wow so this is where are the men in fashion are (not going to address sexual orientation). A few years ago I had a taste of it when I worked for Details magazine but most of my fashion industry life is in the company of women. So as I watched the show I realized it was cast incredibly well. I could barely concentrate on the clothing the men were sooo good looking. My top pick of one to watch being the British Max Rogers with a great curly mane of hair. Thanks to twitter @perryellisdotcom I was able to find his name-not an easy feat online. Turns out he's got a slew of fabulous covers to his name-Italian Vogue, GQ, and a D&G Ad. A lucky hair stylist friend was fortunate enough to work with him at the Michael Bastian show said running her hands through his hair was dreamy. Oh to be those hands.

What shoes go with SNOW and FASHION WEEK?

OK so there are fashionistas and shoeistas and I'm 100% fashionista. Way more into the clothes and see shoes as a hassle because most are only semi comfy for me. I'm always having shoe 'issues' because of small calves, intolerance for heels, and looking dorky in flats. But this fashion week is no exception for a shoe challenge. It started with us getting dumped on by a big snowstorm on the 2nd official day Feb 10th and my Trotters from NORDSTROMS (only a year old) totally leaking on me. Wet feet is not a good look on me-pout. So what's a girl to do to look fashionable and fabulous at all these fashion events with inclement weather and boots looking silly with dresses on me. It's the shoe swap out. At the Fashion 2.0 Social Media Awards at the W Tuscany hosted by Ideeli and Style Coalition I saw twitter winner Alicia who is @dkny pr girl do it best. Here's a photo of her two fabulous shoe looks. Boots are real apres ski from paragon and leopard pumps from Christian Louboutin. I can't pull it off so I'll live vicariously through her. 100%deliciousness.

She has been selling and showing her line in New Zealand for 12 years and this is her inaugural showing in the big apple. All the fashion heavy weights such as Linda Fargo of Bergdorfs, a stylist from Harper's Bazaar, and a few from Elle Magazine saw the line on the same day as us. I'm so excited to share with you my top picks from Alexandra Owen's line. It's rare that a new talent emerges on the New York scene that blows me out of the water (and even before the official Amex Mercedes Benz Fashion starts). The fabulous Syl Tang of Hip Guide who has seen it all fashion wise (the good, the so so, and the BAAAD) invited us to the private showing in Hotel 41.
I'm not one to fall in love with a black dress but...If you were going to buy one this would be it. So versatile, sophisticated, and perfect for a wide range of ages.

As a lover of fashion designers who are a bit indie, or under the radar I was ecstatic to learn that our own Erin Fetherston's Birds of a "Fether" is nominated with other big wigs such as Chanel in Best Online Video by a Fashion designer. (Ideeli and the Style Coalition have partnered to bring you The Fashion 2.0 Social Media awards.) Not that I don't consider Erin a big fish, there are just still many who haven't heard of her-despite a major partnership with TARGET as the 9th GO designer three years ago. Hello all you people living under a rock, that's like a big deal. My new favorite obsession is hanging upside down at the OM FACTORY's Anti-Gravity Yoga class. It just feels so delicious and nutritious. The activity brings space between my vertibrae relieving low back pain and adds inches (no need for heels). I'm obviously on to something as Pink who has a gymnast past showed us how far you can take this talent at the Grammy's last night. I tuned in just in time to see her aerial performance and was astonished by her ability to sing simultaneously. I'm still mastering how to breathe while hanging from the 9 foot fabric.

Coat Conundrum

Well it's January and I'm not crazy about arctic weather so I've been dreaming of Tortola.. but I digress.
So this year I decided it was time to finally replace the black walking sleeping bag of a down coat from Eddie Bauer that my mother bought me in (I'm almost embarrassed to say) 1989. As a Californian my Mother was very concerned about me keeping warm when she I left for boarding school on the east coast-she used to joke that the definition of a sweater was something you put on when you Mother is cold.
Well this coat has been the mother of all coats-nothings going to get through and I nicknamed it a homeless person's wet dream. Besides being functional it is about a - 3 on the fashion scales and made me look liked a giant charred marshmallow who needs to lose 50 pounds. (ps I'm like a size 4). So I decided that I at least have to replace it with a puffer that's in my color palette-like brown. So search high and low I did. What I found was a full length puffer from bluefly.com and it's pretty sleek for that sort of thing. The stitching is slimming, the hood is lined in fur but alas it is not as warm as the black marshmallows which I'm dying to actually give away to the homeless. So I'm left wondering what to do since I thought this new coat would be the new holy grail of coats for New York city life. My 70's fur is fabulous (thanks again Mom) but it has no hood and isn't long enough for deep deep freeze. So please weigh in..do I keep the black marshmallow for those super cold days or give it to someone who really needs it?

As part of the greening process of my life..I have recently changed my diet for health reasons I decided to take a hard look at all of the products in my life. Everything is under scrutiny and review. Toothpaste, shampoo, moisturizer, facial cleanser, mascara, and the whole lot.
Without getting too technical here I used www.CosmeticDatabase.com to figure out what products were really worth their snuff and which ones were hype. See there are many companies jumping onto the 'natural' bandwagon in skin and beauty but few are delivering true organic, and non chemical products without harsh preservatives. Even within products lines there are some products which are better than others. For example there are some burt's bee's that are great and some that do not score so well from cosmetic database (0 being good). Pretty much everything in the drug store has a bad list of ingredients-forget Aveno! But Vaseline 100% petroleum passed with a flying zero. A sad ending for Casey Johnson

I am saddened to hear about the passing of Casey Johnson. I met Casey Johnson 10 years ago and sadly it was very clear to me that she had a drug and alcohol addiction. These are serious family diseases that can be arrested but not cured. There are very few families I know untouched by addiction. What some may not know is that Casey Johnson was on the short list as Paris Hilton's sidekick on the reality show The Simple Life. For reasons we may never know she didn't accept the challenge. I wonder if things would have been different for her. How easy it is in cities like New York and LA to make society and parties your whole life. Makes me wonder if you didn't have to work would you? And how would you stay sane?
Was it easier to be the poor little rich girl stereotype? Was she overwhelmed by the the daunting task of making something of herself while always being smaller than Johnson&Johnson? The movie Metropolitan explores these topics of children of the wealthy often feel they can never be as successful as their parents. Sadly in new york it feels as if we have more Casey Johnsons than Ivanka Trumps.

Sometimes I watch movies just for the costumes...ok well a lot of times I watch them only for that reason. But right now The Young Victoria is playing at the cinemas and it is not only visually stunning but a great story. I recommend it highly and suggest you visit the Clearview Chelsea Cinema if you are in New York City because they have a few costumes by Sandy Powell on display in their foyer. A wonderful escape into royalty and grandeur during this cold winter.
A good DVD option is the classic The Lady Eve

I never thought I would tout Victoria's Secret...especially since they haven't paid me a dime but I'm going to. (BTW-all of my posts are strictly editorial)
As a small chested woman I have always been personally challenged when it came to finding a brassiere that fit me well and that I could stand more for than 20 minutes. The wireless ones always left me flat chested looking. I've tried so many and most of the time go commando because frankly it's more comfortable and I can't stand the thought of wearing a bra that is frankly slightly bigger than my actual cup size and that's my usual conundrum. For a while I thought I might be a AA but this has always been denied by 'bra experts'. So I finally broke down and tried the Very Sexy Push Up Wireless Bra with success. It is not only comfy it's giving me the best cleavage of my life. Anyone else jumping for joy for the fact that 'older' are finally being portrayed in the movie as hot? I am! It seems that over 40 set is the new 30. You go Meryl, Julianne Moore in Single Man, Nicole Kidman, Sophia Loren, and Judi Dench in Nine. I laughed so hard during 'It's Complicated' but was even more delighted by the fact that Meryl just glowed her way through the whole movie. My Mom is a gorgeous woman over 60 and it's about time Hollywood stopped putting these women out to pasture.

Color me happy. Will it be inexpensive? No, but who cares. I really know how to pick real estate. First the Ace opens and now The Empire Room in the ground floor of the Empire State building. So glad my little nabe is getting swankified. I will have a great time 'taking meetings' in my new 2nd other livingroom-the Ace is still my number 1 but hey that can change.

Achieving Holiday Zen Zone

4 years ago I reclaimed Christmas as my own. No longer would I look to another to create my holiday joy. I decided to be in charge of my joy from then on. This year attending my yearly yoga retreat I noticed the cumulative effects of visiting such a place. I found less of a difference between the outside world and the inside retreat world. My diet is similar, my mental state overall zen, and I still enjoy a quick jaunt to the mall. Back in the city I was able to stay really focused on the task at hand-holiday cookie baking and last minute gifts. I found myself enjoying the tasks because I didn't feel scattered or overwhelmed. Now to keep this zen zone forever.....

Brooklyn Bowl the badass superstah

Hit the Brooklyn Bowl for a bday party the other cold and windy night. despite frigid temperatures the place was hopping and wait time was 4 hours. Luckily our birthday girl did some magic with the twins to expedite the experience. The trick with large parties there is to share bowling shoes. Yes, they limit the shoes they give out. It's $40 an hour per lane-this aint your laid back california bowling I grew up with. But seriously it seemed like our group was more into the idea of bowling than actually playing. It reminded me of when Remote Lounge opened up. A lot of people drinking, partying, eating, hanging just for the novelty of the experience. Blue Ribbon is doing the food and it's not on my current program but I'm sure they're making a killing. Fries with gravy and cheese???
And there's plenty or room and pockets to do everything but bowl-eat, drink at the bar, dance to the live band, or pose. It's a totally entertaining.
Just to be clear this is full on hipster land so expect to see all those cool kids doing what they do best-hanging with their crew....don't expect to make new friends it's BYO.

At a bowling birthday party in Brooklyn I brought mini cupcakes from Kumquat. They were such a hit I decided to blog about them. I got so many inquiries about them due to their unique flavors. I bought the assortment box and one of the cupcakes was topped with bacon. My top pick was the chocolate peppermint. I figure they are so small they've removed the guilt for the eating experience. So they bake in brooklyn and sell at the cool fleas in nyc. Right now during the holidays they are stationed at Gifted (check their site for days and times) on lafayette and 4th street.

More like underwhelming.
Yes Basel is blue chip art and it is a huge show-impressive really. But I was left with the feeling of continuity. As if all of the artists were of the same sensibility, the same style, and almost interchangable. I didn't see a huge different between each booth. Galleries shoot me now...well Sylvester Stalone's booth which was crammed all the time was different no I re-frase UGLY. I'm just saying.
With the high price to show at this show blue chip art is derigeur to make money but I'm wondering if it's worth for galleries to avoid risk? Who suffers?
Some highlights which I enjoyed:

The people watching on the VIP/Press preview during the day was phenomenal. The quality of the collectors were so high. Very well dressed in designer garb, jewels, leboutins, jimmy choos, ,limited edition louis vuitton bags, kelly bags, and much more. Women were better turned out than at fashion week. These women have the time, cash, and the style to dress. I know we are in a recession but in the first hour or probably even before the show started a bizarro piece by david atmejd sold for 120K-just pocket change for the Aby Rosen's of the world. There are sales being made.
I was anticipating the night time vernissage but it was the poor sister event-lots of flash but fake bling. Just goes to show you in the art world the REAL and VERY first view is the best.

Still enjoying the BK (brooklyn) flavor of Genart's party at Aqua Art. Fashions were in full force. Performances by Overthrow and DJ's Ray Milian Off The Radar were off the hook. Art was so intoxicating they had a hard time kicking the art lovers out at the end of the night. Leave it to Ian Gerard to curate another great fete in foreign territory.Very stylish men at this party. My good friend Fritz who lives in Miami filled me in on his last 4 years as publisher of 'The greatest erotic art of today' a coffee table books which he's on version #3. He introduced me to a very interesting artist named Perego artofperego. He paints in this jacket and uses his hair as a paint brush.

WTF at the W

I thought I got on a plane and left New York!! Wait I did. So why am I hanging out at the bursting at the seams uber hot new W in South beach watching all of New York walk by? Art Basel week has not only brought collectors from all over the globe but the cool cats of new york who can afford to get away. Today at Pulse I saw a tall guy who I've eyed (but never met) at least 4 New York/Hamptons parties. So back to the W where my girlfriend and I are flies on the wall ie one with the the sofa-people watching through the night. There's a lot of coming and going and the killer high heels and BOOTS are astonishing. Art Nexus is having a party out by the pool and in the front bar it looks like cougar central-too much botox in that lighting for our taste. We awarded this young girl in sailors hat as top pick. Other notables were those in suped up legging versions-bedazzled and glittery, one in pink silk strapless pantsuit probably from the 70's.-belted and billowy, Naomi Campbell in a nurses hat type head piece, Farrell Williams of NERD in white t-shirt and jeans (what is it about famous people wearing clothes that look like nothing but cost a fortune???-like prada)

Overheard at Vanity Fair/Moca fete, 'F*% the art!' Apparently no dress code either.
Fashion wise this party is a mixed bag of art nuts. You've got the ladies who lunch and buy art all decked in designer cocktail dresses dripping in jewels and their token napping husbands, you've got the drag queen couple, woman in a Mohave desert print ensemble with tennis shoes and white socks, artists too cool to dress in white t-shirt (def not Hanes) and jeans, cute straight guys (although I don't have the pics to prove it) young hipsters doing the American apparel look, orange head trying way too hard with a sequin dress waaaaay too short, a woman wearing her dress inside out (not sure if on purpose), guy with panda bear head piece and very very small people. Very good bedroom lucite sex kitten heels.

So the grecarious and uber talented girls from The Hunt for Good Americans are on their home stretch with their documentary. They have returned to the big apple from their whirlwind tour swathed in colorful and zany vintage. All that's left is to edit the film, add music, distribute, and it's on it's way to being seen. They are on their home stretch but still need your support as the project was been bootstrapped funded. So please this thanksgiving if you have in your heart learn more about this project and support an artist!

At the farmers market I ran into style icon and dandy Patrick McDonald and was excited to wish him a happy holidays. At Fashion Week I'm also impressed by his attention to detail with his outfits. This man does not dress half way! He's got the hat, the jewelry, the matching gloves, the whole bag of style. He had big news to share with me. Next Wednesday night on Bravo premieres the show Launch my Line which he is a contestant in. I can hardly contain myself. As I check out the website bios it's clear he's the most colorful of the bunch. Hosted by Dean and Dan of DSquared with judges Stephanie Greenfield of Scoop and Lisa Kline. I can't wait although I will be art Basel in Miami next week and will have to squeeze it in.

Mikey's young but old timey bday

Mikey (of Mikey's Hookup) the pimpest lad in the land(he even has his own stalker fans) , swathed in white shag coat held court at his birthday party in Williamsburg's Manhattan Inn Sunday eve. (Don't you just love a good party on a Sunday-the antidote to amateur night). The venue is new to the scene but decor and vibe is super old fashioned-as an old fashioned girl I love the design aspect of new/old/worn/character. Organized by his dear friend Malisa Masala (of the talented fashion design house RED MASALA) Attendees were the movers and shakers of the hood- Tunde- of TV on the Radio, makeup artist to the stars Agata Helena, the band members of Leigh-Ra, photographers Steven Laxton and Eric Martin.

Dress code was old timey which meant flapper outfits, ragtime garb, OTT vintage hats, capes, and quirky vintage. I was fascinated by the shoes worn by some of the women-t-straps, character shoes, glittered chuckies, and the my favorite-red patent leather pumps with red ankle sheers-divine!! Outfits caused the mood of the crowd to be experimental, playful, and almost halloweenesque-what happens on Halloween will be all forgotten the next day.
Entertainment was fierce-a self taught pianist churned out rag time toe tappers, ethereal and flapperesque Christy Leigh sang 'magnets' and happy birthday for the bday boy, burlesque dancer named Pandora stole the show in her pink confection corseted costume as she exhibited the clam shell and turkey tail with poise, and dancing turned into a foot stomping, experimental, rowdy bath tub gin type of good time. I ended up having a blast fake tap dancing because it seemed the most natural way to move to the music. Crunking wasn't going to cut it!

JUST SAY NO/MAYBE to TRENDS

What is feel is so wrong with the fashion world is this ever churning need to discover/uncover/reinvent trends that are then force fed the general public. 80's neon colors, mini skirts, peasants skirts, baby doll dresses, ect ect ect! Women each have different shapes and coloring-so what may be one woman's answer to her body imbalances may be a fashion faux pas on another. For example a high waist espresso pencil skirt looks amazing on me because I have a long torso, short legs, an hourglass shape, and red autumn color palette. Put the same skirt on a woman with long legs, inverted triangle shape (wider in the upper half than lower), and soft summer coloring and you have a four alarm fashion emergency.
Yves Saint Laurent said it best, "Fashions fade, Style is eternal"
And Coco Chanel said, " The best color in the whole world is the one that looks good on you!"
So I urge you to find out and explore your own body-it's star features and it's challenges with the help of a stylist if you can. Ask yourself-does this trend serve me?In the long run it will save you time, energy and money.

Trophy Wife-chic or dead?

Did anyone see the spread in Harper's Bazaar this month (December 2009) called Diary of a Trophy Wife dictated to Rita Wilson, not read? It pokes fun at the life of a trophy wife. "The first time I had Botox, I had a headache for three days and I couldn't make it to the Cavalli trunk show. Heartbreak-especially since my forehead was so smooth, you couldn't even tell I was sad." Is humor the new black thanks to Tina Fey? Why is Bazaar making fun of the exact image they sell? Aren't they the #1 pushers of Botox and Jimmy Choo. I guess they feel that they've been taking themselves too seriously. It's about time!

One look does not fit all

The wonderful thing about clothing and accessories is that they are voluntary contributions. Unlike hair coloring, style isn't permanent and always evolving. A few years ago I was Loft living Williamsburg (Brooklyn not Virginia) and trying to fit in style wise. Everyone was way too cool for school that hanging with my cool sexually ambiguous friends I found myself becoming a chameleon. I went to a prom party circa 1980. I think Marc Jacobs may have found inspiration from us hipsters in WillieB. W Magazine did a whole article around the Berlinsburg moment-thanks to a local dive club. I dyed my own chuckies, I cut holes in my shirts, I cut fingers off my gloves, I went for eccentric. Did it work? Was it fun? Yes and yes. Was it me? No but when I moved into the city I reinvented myself again.
I encourage you to explore experiment and find yourself. Or just play dress up. It always worked for me!

Local Gem Orly Couture

Right under our noses in New York city lies so much talent. My inbox is always overflowing with talented designers reaching out to me. I sometimes do not make the time to go through it all. But luckily I visited Orly Shani's website Orly Couture because it is a gem. The styles are slightly inspired by the 80's but wearable. Original, one of a kind, re-purposed vintage, and one to check out. I love how she describes her line,
"When you buy an Orly Couture original, you’ll purchase something that’s rough around all the right edges. It’s never perfect or flawless, but it’s always just right."
Progress not perfection. Fashion should enhance not dictate.
Prices range-belts start at $20 and some dresses are $500. Most items in the $200 range. Not bad for handmade.

Can you recognize this actor? Bet you can't put your finger on it.

It's Jude Law as Minx in the movie RAGE set in the fashion industry. I love that Jude has the kahunas to play a 'model' and does such a hilarious Russian accent. His different looks are strong, striking, and playful.
The movie was done with a very small budget and shows you how you really can tell a moving story if you have strong actors-which the movie does. Judy Dench, Diane Weist, Steve Buschemi, and several other star in monologue format.
So back to Jude...isn't he just the sexiest...even as a woman??
